This Sunday, 2 February, we mark the feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. There is a service of Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer at 8am and Choral Evensong at 4pm, both in St Mary the Virgin, Horne.
This week’s online service is led by the Revd Steve Bishop. To follow the service, click on the arrow here and find the words below.
Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and cornerstone,
chosen of the Lord and precious
binding all the Church in one.
Holy Sion’s help forever, and our confidence alone.
To this temple, where we gather,
come, O Lord of Hosts, today;
with thy wonted loving-kindness,
hear thy servants as they pray;
and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls for ay.
Here vouchsafe to all thy servants
what they ask of thee to gain,
here to have and hold for ever
those good things their prayers obtain,
and hereafter, in thy glory evermore with thee to reign.
Praise and honour to the Father,
praise and honour to the Son,
praise and honour to the Spirit,
ever Three and ever one,
Consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run.
6th or 7th Century, Tr. J M Neale (1818-1866)
Tune: WESTMINSTER ABBEY, H Purcell (1659-1695)
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
This is the day that the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Introduction
Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, who died for us,
forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen
Absolution
The Collect for the Presentation of Christ in the Temple
Almighty and ever-living God,
clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple,
in substance of our flesh:
grant that we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

Talk
by Revd Steve Bishop
Grace, mercy and peace from our God our father
and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
And also with you.
Lord, everything in heaven and earth is yours.
All things come from you and of your own do we give you.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Eternal God,
the light of the minds that know you,
the joy of the hearts that love you,
and the strength of the wills that serve you:
grant us so to know you that we may truly love you,
so to love you that we may truly serve you,
whose service is perfect freedom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord Jesus,
Give us your light in our eyes,
your word on our lips,
and your love in our hearts.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit,
to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen
Blessing
Go in peace to love and to serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
Faithful vigil ended,
Watching, waiting cease;
Master, grant your servant
His discharge in peace.
All your Spirit promised,
All the Father willed;
Now these eyes behold it
Perfectly fulfilled.
This your great deliverance
Sets your people free;
Christ, their light, uplifted
All the nations see.
Christ, your people’s glory!
Watching, doubting, cease:
Grant to us your servants
Our discharge in peace.
