Online Service for 22 June 2025

This Sunday, 22 June, we mark the Birth of John the Baptist and the Patronal Festival of St John the Baptist, Outwood. There will be said services of Morning Worship at 9:30am in St Bartholomew, Burstow and at 10am in St Mary the Virgin, Horne, and Holy Communion at 11am in St John the Baptist, Outwood.

This week’s online service is led by Revd Alan Bayes.

On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry
announces that the Lord is nigh.
Awake and harken, for he brings
glad tidings of the King of kings!

Then cleansed be every breast from sin:
make straight the way for God within,
prepare we in our hearts a home
where such a mighty guest may come.

For thou art our salvation, Lord,
our refuge and our great reward.
Without thy grace we waste away
like flowers that wither and decay.

To heal the sick stretch out thine hand,
and bid the fallen sinner stand.
Shine forth and let thy life restore
earth’s own true loveliness once more

All praise eternal Son, to thee
whose advent doth thy people free,
whom with the Father we adore,
and Holy Ghost, for evermore.

Charles Coffin (1676-1749) trans John Chandler (1806-1876)
Tune: Winchester New, Musikalisches Handbuch der geistlichen Melodien (1690)

The Lord is here.
His spirit is with us.

Lord Jesus, you stand among us and we do not recognise you.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.

Lord Jesus, we are not worthy to untie the thong of your sandal.
Christ have mercy.
Christ have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you are the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
Lord have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

Absolution

Collect Prayer for the Birth of John the Baptist
Almighty God,
by whose providence your servant John the Baptist
was wonderfully born,
and sent to prepare the way of your Son our Saviour
by the preaching of repentance:
lead us to repent according to his preaching
and, after his example, constantly to speak the truth,
boldly to rebuke vice, and patiently to suffer for the truth’s sake;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The first reading is from Isaiah 40:1-11
read by Ginette Nye

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

The Gospel reading is from Luke:1:57-66,80
read by Peter Nye

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Talk
by Revd Alan Bayes

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Merciful Lord,
whose prophet John the Baptist proclaimed your Son
as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world;
grant that we, who in this sacrament
have known your forgiveness and your life-giving love,
may ever tell of your mercy and your peace,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing

Go in peace to love and to serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.

We have a gospel to proclaim,
good news for all throughout the earth;
the gospel of a Saviour’s name:
we sing his glory, tell his worth.

Tell of his birth at Bethlehem,
not in a royal house or hall
but in a stable dark and dim:
the Word made flesh, a light for all.

Tell of his death at Calvary,
hated by those he came to save;
in lonely suffering on the cross
for all he loved, his life he gave.

Tell of that glorious Easter morn:
empty the tomb, for he was free;
he broke the power of death and hell
that we might share his victory.

Tell of his reign at God’s right hand
by all creation glorified;
he sends his Spirit on his church
to live for him, the Lamb who died.

Now we rejoice to name him King:
Jesus is Lord of all the earth;
this gospel message we proclaim:
we sing his glory, tell his worth.
