Online Service for 5 October 2025

Today, Sunday, 5 October, there is a service of Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer at 8am in St Mary the Virgin, Horne; a Harvest Service with Holy Baptism at 9:30am in St Bartholomew, Burstow; a Family Service at 10am in St Mary the Virgin, Horne, and Holy Communion at 11am in St John the Baptist, Outwood.

This week’s online service is led by Revd Alan Bayes.

Father, hear the prayer we offer:
Not for ease that prayer shall be,
But for strength that we may ever
Live our lives courageously.

Not for ever in green pastures
Do we ask our way to be;
But the steep and rugged pathway
May we tread rejoicingly.

Not for ever by still waters
Would we idly rest and stay;
But would smite the living fountains
From the rocks along our way.

Be our strength in hours of weakness,
In our wand’rings be our guide;
Through endeavour, failure, danger,
Father, be thou at our side.

Maria Willis (1824-1908)
Tune: Marching, Martin Shaw (1875-1958)

The Lord be with you.
And with you spirit.

God be gracious to us and bless us, and make your face shine upon us.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

May your ways be known upon earth, your saving power among the nations.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

You, Lord, have made known your salvation, and reveal your justice in the sight of the nations.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Absolution
Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Collect Prayer for the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity
O Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear
the prayers of your people who call upon you;
and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do,
and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Talk
by Revd Alan Bayes

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Almighty God,
you have taught us through your son
that love is the fulfilling of the law,
Grant that we may love you with our whole heart
and our neighbour as ourselves,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Blessing

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
forgive our foolish ways!
Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,
in purer lives thy service find,
in deeper rev’rence praise,
in deeper rev’rence praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard,
beside the Syrian sea,
the gracious calling of the Lord,
let us, like them, without a word,
rise up and follow thee,
rise up and follow thee.

O Sabbath rest by Galilee!
O calm of hills above,
Where Jesus knelt to share with thee
The silence of eternity,
Interpreted by love,
interpreted by love!

Drop thy still dews of quietness,
till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of thy peace,
the beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,
O still small voice of calm,
O still small voice of calm.

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
Tune: Repton, Charles H H Parry (1848-1918)

Organist: Peter Nye.
