Easter Day 2022

This week, on Easter Day, Sunday 17 April, there is an early morning service on Outwod Common at 7am. Then there are services of Holy Communion in the three benefice churches: at 9.30am at St Bartholomew, Burstow, at 10am St Mary the Virgin, Horne and at 11am at St John the Baptist, Outwood. And as always, there is an online service here, too, which this week is led by the Revd Charles Sargent

To follow today’s service just click on the arrow here and find the words below.

Jesus Christ is ris’n today, alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss, alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heav’nly King, alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save, alleluia!

But the pains that he endured, alleluia!
Our salvation have procured, alleluia!
Now above the sky he’s King, alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing, alleluia!

This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Let us pray:

The Collect for Easter Day

Lord of all life and power,
who through the mighty resurrection of your Son
overcame the old order of sin and death
to make all things new in him:
grant that we, being dead to sin
and alive to you in Jesus Christ,
may reign with him in glory;
to whom with you and the Holy Spirit
be praise and honour, glory and might,
now and in all eternity.
Amen

The Gospel reading
by Judith Calver

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

The Gospel reading is from John 20: 1-18

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Talk
by Revd Charles Sargent

The anthem is ‘This joyful Eastertide’
(English traditional arranged by Charles Wood, 1866-1926)
Sung by the choir of St Mary the Virgin, Horne on 22 April 2018

This joyful Eastertide, away with care and sorrow!
My Love, the Crucified, hath sprung to life this morrow.
Had Christ, that once was slain, ne’er burst his three-day prison,
our faith had been in vain; but now hath Christ arisen.

My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber,
till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number.

Refrain

Death’s flood hath lost its chill, since Jesus crossed the river:
Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver.

Refrain

The Prayers

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Thine be the glory, ris’n, conqu’ring Son,
Endless is the vict’ry thou o’er death hast won;
Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
Kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, ris’n, conqu’ring Son,
Endless is the vict’ry thou o’er death hast won.

Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;
Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom.
Let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,
For her Lord now liveth; death hast lost her sting.

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life;
Life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife.
Make us more than conqu’rors through thy deathless love;
Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above.
