Services in Church

We hold a number of different types of service, with a different focus and formality. Here is a brief guide to what to expect.

We also have a Calendar of Services.

Holy Communion is at the centre of the Benefice’s worship and includes the distribution of the Holy Sacrament. Anyone who is confirmed or receives Communion in their own church is welcome to receive Communion here. The services are relatively formal and include hymns and other music. We usually have a space where children can go if they are unable to take a full part in the service, where they will need to be supervised.

The Family Service at Horne aims to be inclusive for everyone. It is a less formal act of worship, with singing and is generally more interactive than the more formal services. There is a place for young children to go if they need to, but many will find they want to take part in the service.

This is a service of Holy Communion using the form in the Book of Common Prayer. We do not usually have music and it takes place in a quiet and reflective setting.

This non-Eucharistic service, led either by clergy or a lay person, takes as its basis the early sections of the Communion service, but there is no Sacrament. It is relatively formal but, as usual, there is a place that children can go if they need it.

Café Church is held in Smallfield Church Hall and is very informal. Most of the time is spent on activities accompanied by drinks with biscuits and cake. This is an opportunity to relax and get to know each other. Towards the end of the time, we sing songs, and listen to a reading and a short talk, related to the activities hat we have been doing.

This is a formal service sung by our Benefice Choir, following the traditional form. Many people find a calming and refreshing experience, as they listen to the words that have been spoken for over 400 years, and the music that accompanies them.

Throughout the year we have various special services, often marking significant liturgical moments. These services are specific to the occasion and take a variety of forms from a solemn Eucharist to a Seder Meal. More information is available on the relevant occasion.
